Trip Itinenary
- Day 1. Arrival in Madrid from the various points of origin. Passengers will have a transfer service from the airport or train station to the hotel for the first night. Welcome at the hotel by the El Peregrino Travel staff. Overnight at the hotel.
- Day 2. Madrid – Ávila – Fátima Breakfast at the hotel. On the first day of our pilgrimage, we depart for Ávila, one of the capitals of Castilla y León. Ávila is a beautiful medieval city known for its impressive and well-preserved walls that surround an artistic historic center filled with cobblestone streets and lively squares, with notable landmarks such as the Cathedral, Plaza del Mercado Chico, and various palaces.
But what makes Ávila especially relevant for us as pilgrims is the major sites related to the life of Saint Teresa of Jesus. In the Church of La Santa is the house where Teresa spent her childhood; we will visit this place and then continue to the Monastery of the Incarnation, perhaps the most important place in the life of St. Teresa, as she spent a large portion of her life here. We will visit the museum where pilgrims can learn what the life of St. Teresa was like, as well as the life of the Carmelite Sisters who still live in the monastery today. We will also have the opportunity for a moment of recollection and to participate in the Eucharist at one of the sites we visit.
After the visits, we continue our journey to Fátima. Transfer to the hotel for dinner and overnight. - Day 3. Fátima Breakfast at the hotel. Today, we dedicate the full day to discovering and immersing ourselves in the Sanctuary and spirituality of Fátima. In the morning, we will walk the Vía Sacra to participate in the Stations of the Cross along the Valinhos path. Along the way, we will stop at Loca do Cabeço, where an important apparition took place. At the end of the Way of the Cross, we will visit the homes of the Little Shepherds in the village of Aljustrel—the house of Lúcia, and the house of Francisco and Jacinta. In the afternoon, we will visit the Sanctuary complex of Fátima:
- The Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity
- The beautiful Rosary Basilica, where the three shepherd children are buried. We will conclude at the heart of the Sanctuary—the Capelinha, the Chapel of the Apparitions.
Pilgrims may participate in Eucharistic Adoration and confessions at the various chapels. At 7:15 PM, we join the Spanish-language Mass at the Chapel of the
Apparitions. Dinner at the hotel. After dinner, we can participate in the Holy Rosary and the Candlelight Procession.
- Day 4. Fátima – Porto – Santiago de Compostela Breakfast at the hotel. Possibility of celebrating Mass at the Sanctuary before departing for Porto.
Arrival in the beautiful city of Porto for a panoramic visit. Highlights include the Clerigos Tower, the Cathedral, and the historic bridges that cross the Douro River. After the city tour, we continue our pilgrimage to Santiago. Arrival, hotel transfer, dinner, and overnight. - Day 5. Santiago de Compostela Breakfast at the hotel. Today, we visit Santiago de Compostela, final destination of millions of pilgrims who have walked the Camino for centuries. As pilgrims, we will enter the Plaza del Obradoiro and admire the majestic façade of the Cathedral of Santiago.
We will take a guided visit through the medieval streets and squares of the city, and then enter the cathedral to venerate the tomb of the Apostle James the Greater—one of Jesus’s closest apostles, whose remains, according to Church tradition, rest here. We will participate in the Pilgrim’s Mass. Free afternoon in Santiago. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. - Day 6. Santiago – Covadonga – Santander Breakfast at the hotel. We continue our pilgrimage to Covadonga, a Marian Sanctuary in Asturias. Before arriving at the Sanctuary, we will stop for lunch in Cangas de Onís. Then we ascend the mountain to the beautiful Sanctuary of Covadonga. We will visit the Basilica and the Holy Cave, where the image of La Santina (the beloved Virgin of Covadonga) is found. Opportunity to celebrate Mass at this important Christian sanctuary. After the visit, we continue to Santander. Arrival at the hotel, check-in, dinner, and overnight.
- Day 7. Santander – Santo Toribio – Garabandal – Santander Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Santo Toribio de Liébana. Today, we cross the Picos de Europa, a stunning mountain range that leads us to a secluded monastery hidden in the Liébana region.
We visit this ancient monastery, home to one of the most important relics of Christianity—the Lignum Crucis, the largest surviving piece of the True Cross of Christ.
We will learn why this relic is preserved here, have time for prayer before it, and consider the possibility of celebrating the Eucharist. After the visit, we drive to Potes, one of Spain’s most beautiful and picturesque towns, for free time and lunch.
In the afternoon, we travel to Garabandal, a small Cantabrian village where, in the 1960s, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to four young girls for several years, leaving numerous messages. These apparitions were documented and remain under study by the Church.
We will visit the parish church, the pilgrimage center, and walk up to Los Pinos via the lane that is now also a Way of the Cross. Here, we will have time for personal or group prayer at the site where Our Lady frequently appeared. Return to Santander for dinner and overnight. - Day 8. Santander – Loyola – Lourdes Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the Basque Country to visit Loyola. Our pilgrimage stop today is the Holy House, where St. Ignatius of Loyola—founder of the Society of Jesus—was born and converted.
We will visit the beautiful basilica, the Tower House, and the museum that recounts the saint’s life. In the house is the Chapel of the Conversion, where we will have time for the Eucharist and personal prayer.
We then continue toward Lourdes, crossing the French border. Arrival, hotel check-in, dinner, and overnight. - Day 9. Lourdes Breakfast at the hotel. Today, we dedicate the entire day to Lourdes, one of the central sites of our Marian pilgrimage. In the morning, we participate in Mass at the Grotto.
We will watch a video explaining the message of Lourdes to better understand the significance of the apparitions. We will also visit the Sanctuary complex and important sites in the life of St. Bernadette Soubirous, the young girl who received the apparitions.
Throughout the day, pilgrims may spend time in personal prayer, Eucharistic Adoration at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, confessions, and other activities of the Sanctuary. There is also the possibility of visiting the baths.
Dinner at the hotel. At night, participate in the Torchlight Procession while praying the Rosary. Overnight in Lourdes. - Day 10. Lourdes – Torreciudad – Zaragoza Breakfast at the hotel. Today we travel through the impressive Pyrenees to the Sanctuary of Torreciudad. This Marian Sanctuary, deeply linked to St. Josemaría Escrivá, is set above the El Grado Reservoir. It houses the image of Our Lady of Torreciudad and is a great shrine dedicated entirely to honoring Mary.
We will visit the Sanctuary, especially the magnificent Aragonese-style altarpiece, the Marian galleries, and have the possibility of celebrating the Eucharist. At the indicated time, continue to Zaragoza. Arrival, check-in, and dinner. - Day 11. Zaragoza – Madrid Breakfast at the hotel. This morning we visited another major Marian Sanctuary of our pilgrimage—Our Lady of the Pillar. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared in the flesh to the Apostle James in Zaragoza to encourage him in his mission of evangelization. She appeared standing on a Jasper Pillar, which has been venerated ever since as the sign that the Virgin was physically present in this place.
We will also visit the city of Zaragoza itself, with highlights such as the Aljafería Palace and the Cathedral (La Seo). We will celebrate Mass in Zaragoza and then have free time in the city before departing for Madrid. Arrival at the hotel, dinner, and overnight. - Day 12. Madrid – Departure Breakfast at the hotel. Farewell to the pilgrims.
